If you don’t know who your perfect client is, you should stop everything right now and figure it out. You will never get anywhere in your field if you don't know who your client is because the clients are the ones who will be the source of your livelihood.

They are the ones who will give you a check every month or every week, so if you don’t know who these people are then you will have no clue how to reach them or how to market to them. You will also have a hard time keeping clients around if you don’t understand who they are and what their needs are.

So, how do you know who your perfect client is? This is a common question asked by many beginning entrepreneurs and business owners. It really isn’t as difficult as it may seem to figure it out. You don’t need a marketing or business degree, just some well worded questions to ask and a little bit of research.

The internet is full of all kinds of information on specific markets, such as music education. You can narrow down who your ideal client is down to what they eat for dinner and where they shop. The internet, especially social media websites on the internet, are invaluable resources.

You will want to ask yourself questions about your client such as how old they are, what are their interests, where do they look for products and services that they buy, what problems do they need solved, and what solutions are they looking for in order to solve those problems.

Great places to look are in forums, where real people are asking real questions and discussing topics. Another place to look is at what kinds of articles your clients are reading and what websites they visit. You can also analyze the market in your area to see who these people are and what, how, when, and where they are buying.

Once you’ve compiled all of this information, you should create a “Client Persona”. This is a fake client, on paper, who represents your ideal client. You can even give this persona a name. It should mention all that you know about the client and this will help you to know how and where to reach them, and give you a better understanding of who they are and how you can secure them as your client.

Final Thoughts

Researching your client and creating a client persona of your ideal client will significantly improve your ability to acquire clients and also help you to find ways to separate yourself from your competition. There are a lot of music teachers out there doing exactly what you do, and knowing your client will give you a much stronger chance at reaching those clients first and keeping them.
