Content Writing vs Copywriting

I've been a writer for the past 6 years and I've noticed an increase in the amount of freelance writing gigs that are popping up due to the need for creating online content. Most businesses have set themselves up with a website and are in desperate need of writers.

There is a difference between copywriting and content writing, however.

If you're interested in hiring a freelance writer, it's good to know the difference between the two because not all writers do both. Oftentimes my prospects will assume that I only do one.

Because I do both, everything is much more streamlined for my clients. However, you'll want to aks your freelance writer what they can do for you when interviewing them.

Copywriting

This style of writing is sales based. It is really anything that someone writes with the intent of attracting leads and selling something to them.

This can be web copy, sales letters, scripts, landing pages, and emails. A great copywriter will know how to get your target audience interested in what you are selling.

Content Writing

This style of writing is similar to copywriting and they are often lumped together. However, there is a difference better two. Content writing is not created with the intention of selling something, at least not explicitly. It is really about informing your audience and educationist them. Content is also used to drive traffic on the web and also as a way to get contact info from prospects (more in that in another email). Content writing includes blog posts, articles, newsletters, eBooks, etc.
